Simon Rattle conducts Bernstein’s “Wonderful Town” at the 2002 New Year’s Eve Concert
Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town is a wonderfully swinging homage to 1930s New York: full of wit and irony, with beautiful melodies and pulsating rhythms. Simon Rattle presented the work in 2002 at his first New Year’s Eve Concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker with the support of soloists from the stages of Broadway and the celebrated baritone Thomas Hampson as the star guest – a “joyful musical melee”, as the press described the evening.
