Between nostalgia and new beginnings: music of the fin de siècle
Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony is perhaps the most comprehensive reflection of the spirit of the fin de siècle: late-Romantic opulence abruptly meets modern sounds, the visionary view of the future contrasts with the decadence of a fading century, whose splendour is echoed in the distant signal of a post horn. Our playlist takes you back to this special era between nostalgia and new beginnings with this work and music by Strauss, Ravel, Debussy and others.
