Herbert Blomstedt talks about Paul Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler” Herbert Blomstedt conducts the “Symphonie fantastique”
In this concert, conductor Herbert Blomstedt juxtaposes musical portrayals of two artists: In Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique we experience the highs and lows of a musician’s life, including drug-taking and death. The Renaissance artist Matthias Grünewald is the focus of Paul Hindemith’s symphony Mathis der Maler which was premiered by Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1934.
