“When I look at the structure, the syntax of my music, I realise that its basic gestures are very Hungarian, although I am actually a German product, ‘made in Germany’,” says Márton Illés, who also appears as a concert pianist and conductor. As an avowed anti-serialist, he is in no doubt: “Music conveys emotional as well as physical and gestural content.” Born in Budapest, he studied under Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe, among others.
