Marin Alsop

conductor

“When I started, there were really very few female conductors. And everyone said that it was extremely difficult. But neither gender nor nationality ever played a role for me.” After making the decision to become a conductor at the age of nine during a concert with Leonard Bernstein, Marin Alsop pursued her goal with determination – and with great success. Today, she is renowned around the world for her captivating and inspiring readings, as well as for her innovative programmes and her extensive commitment to audiences of all ages. In 2002, the New York native founded the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, which was renamed the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship in her honour in 2020, to promote the careers of female conductors. In 2021, she was named honorary conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra – the crowning achievement of her 14-year tenure as music director.
