Giovanni Antonini, founding member of the original sound ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, is known for his innovative performances of the Baroque and Classical repertoire. With the Berliner Philharmoniker, he has conducted music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven as well as works by Johann Sebastian Bach since his debut in January 2004. He has also appeared several times with Il Giardino Armonico in the [Original Sound] series at the Philharmonie Berlin.

Antonini received his musical training at the Civica Scuola di Musica in his hometown of Milan and at the Centre de Musique Ancienne in Geneva. He is artistic director of Il Giardino Armonico and the Polish Wratislavia Cantans Festival as well as principal guest conductor of the Basel Chamber Orchestra and Mozarteumorchester in Salzburg. In addition to the concert repertoire of the Baroque and early Classical periods, Giovanni Antonini has also conducted a large number of operas and oratorios by Monteverdi, Handel, Pergolesi, Cimarosa, Mozart and others. He regularly conducts renowned symphony and chamber orchestras, including the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Antonini is the director of the “Haydn 2032” project, which, together with Il Giardino Armonico and the Kammerorchester Basel, will complete the recording and performance of all Haydn symphonies by the 300th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
