Håkan Hardenberger

Trompette

It was while performing the Haydn Concerto at a matinée at the Philharmonie Berlin as a young student in April 1981 that Håkan Hardenberger decided to become a solo trumpeter: “When I experienced these acoustics, which act like an additional instrument. I felt the excitement of the audience and knew: this is what I want!”

Håkan Hardenberger was born in Malmö, began playing the trumpet at the age of eight and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under Pierre Thibaud and in Los Angeles under Thomas Stevens. One of the world’s most acclaimed soloists, he is respected not only for his performances of the Classical repertoire, but also as a pioneer of highly virtuosic new trumpet works by composers such as Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Brett Dean, Hans Werner Henze, Betsy Jolas, Olga Neuwirth, Arvo Pärt, Toru Takemitsu, among others. Hardenberger made his debut in Berliner Philharmoniker concerts at the end of April 2015 with HK Gruber’s concerto [Aerial]. The musician is a regular guest with the world’s leading orchestras (Boston Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and others) and works with conductors such as Daniel Harding, Ingo Metzmacher, Andris Nelsons, Sakari Oramo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and John Storgårds. Hardenberger also appears as a conductor himself, among others with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestras of Tampere, Malmö and Västerås. He is a professor at Malmö Academy of Music and was artistic director of the Malmö Chamber Music Festival.
