His sound is unmistakable and his performances are characterised by spontaneity and originality: after early competition successes, cellist Alban Gerhardt made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the age of 21. His international career has since taken the Berlin-born cellist to appear with almost 250 orchestras around the world. “When I play,” he says, “I always take risks. Although I have a concept of what I’m playing, I sometimes surprise myself at what comes out in the end.”
