“Late Night” concert with Patricia Kopatchinskaja: “Nonsense in Residence”
When violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja hosts a Late Night, one thing is certain: it will be an unusual evening. The Artist in Residence with the Berliner Philharmoniker presents “Nonsense in Residence” here at a late hour – with music by György Ligeti, John Cage, György Kurtág and, for the first time, her own compositions.
While many classical soloists interrupt their work with the traditional repertoire with occasional excursions into contemporary music, the opposite is true of violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Her performances of the familiar works of the canon also benefit from her passionate exploration of new and contemporary music. Since her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2014, she has performed violin concertos by Peter Eötvös and György Ligeti, as well as Arnold Schoenberg and Karl Amadeus Hartmann; the last two she performed under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, who she has known since their student days together in Vienna.
As the Philharmoniker’s Artist in Residence, Kopatchinskaja makes a third appearance in the 2021/22 season in the popular Late Night concerts, and once again proves to be a daring curator in her programming. As Kirill Petrenko explained in an interview, the artist’s feeling for contemporary music also owes much to the fact that she is a composer herself.
