Daniel Harding

Probably the only conductor with a pilot’s license, Daniel Harding, born in Oxford in 1975, began his musical career in Birmingham as assistant to Sir Simon Rattle.

For his official debut conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Harding received the Royal Philharmonic Society “Best Debut” Award. In 1996, he conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time as part of the Berliner Festwochen and also made his debut at the BBC Proms – the youngest conductor in the history of this prestigious festival. One of the most successful orchestra conductors of his generation, he is now music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he celebrated his tenth anniversary in 2017. Harding is conductor laureate of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, with whom he has enjoyed more than 20 years of artistic collaboration. He has also been principal conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Orchestre de Paris. Harding has appeared with leading orchestras around the world and has conducted critically acclaimed opera productions at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Theater an der Wien and Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg festivals. Daniel Harding was awarded the Italian critics’ prize Premio Abbiati, is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and a Knight and Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France.
