Chef d’orchestreAfter Tugan Sokhiev’s acclaimed debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2010, he was immediately invited to return. In 2019, he went on a concert tour with the orchestra and also conducted the traditional end of season concert at the Waldbühne in Berlin.
Tugan Sokhiev, the last pupil of the legendary “conductor-maker” Ilya Musin, is a much sought-after guest at the world’s leading opera houses and orchestras. He was music director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre from 2012 to 2014 and also led the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. The former chief conductor and artistic director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin has made guest appearances with great success with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He has also conducted the Philadelphia and Philharmonia Orchestras and performed with many other leading orchestras in Europe, Asia and the USA. As an opera conductor, Sokhiev made his debut at Welsh National Opera in 2002 with [La Bohème]. A year later, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with the Mariinsky Theatre’s production of [Eugene Onegin]. Numerous other musical theatre productions followed at the Festival in Aix-en-Provence, at the Teatro Real in Madrid as well as at Houston Grand Opera, the Mariinsky Theatre and Wiener Staatsoper. Tugan Sokhiev is Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite and was named “Musician Personality of the Year” by the association of French music critics in 2014.
