Andris Nelsons

Chef d’orchestre

Andris Nelsons has had a remarkable conducting career: initially trained as a trumpeter, the Latvian was, as Sir Simon Rattle’s direct successor, music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra between 2008 and 2015.

He was subsequently appointed to the same position with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and in February 2018, he took up the venerable post of kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. A complete recording of Shostakovich’s symphonies is underway with his American orchestra, as is a recording of all of Bruckner’s symphonies with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He also initiated an extensive collaboration between the two orchestras. Acclaimed for his broad repertoire and his precise and imaginative interpretations, he also delights audiences as an opera conductor – in Bayreuth, New York, Vienna, Munich and London, among other places. Nelsons also has a close partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic, with whom he performed a Beethoven cycle. In 2020, he took over the direction of the orchestra’s legendary New Year Concert. Andris Nelsons has conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker on a regular basis since his debut with the orchestra in October 2010 – including the Waldbühne concert for the second time in 2023.
