Gerhild Romberger
ContraltoGerhild Romberger has a broad repertoire which ranges from the Baroque to the present, and includes all the great alto and mezzo parts of the oratorio and concert literature. Her main focus is on the works of Gustav Mahler, in which she has also appeared with the Berliner Philharmoniker on numerous occasions.
Gerhild Romberger completed her vocal training at Detmold University of Music under Heiner Eckels and graduated with a concert diploma. Her studies were supplemented by further courses with the professors for lieder interpretation Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll. Important milestones for the singer in recent years have been concerts with Manfred Honeck, who engaged her for various Mahler symphonies, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Walter Braunfels’s Great Mass. She has appeared as a guest with the Vienna Philharmonic and Bamberg Symphony (Daniel Harding), the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra (Herbert Blomstedt), La Scala in Milan (Franz Welser Möst), the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester (Riccardo Chailly) and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bernard Haitink). Gerhild Romberger’s discography includes a recording of Mahler’s Third Symphony, which won the BBC Music Magazine Award for Recording of the Year in 2018. Her first solo CD of Mahler lieder was released in 2016. Since 2003, Gerhild Romberger has taught as professor of voice at Detmold University of Music.
